ATC Trail Assessment Information

These pages contain condition assessment information collected on the Appalachian Trail. The information is intended for use by A.T. Trail Maintaining Clubs; federal, state, and local agencies; and other partners of the National Park Service’s Appalachian Trail Park Office and/or Appalachian Trail Conservancy directly involved in the management and protection of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The information should be particularly useful in planning, prioritizing, funding, and completing maintenance and management projects along the A.T.

In 2004, 20% of the A.T. was assessed. Sections were selected based on a random sampling approach in order to generate a base-line condition for the entire A.T. utilizing both field reviewed data and extrapolated data. Each CD contains the data collected in 2004. They are labeled by sample section number.

In 2005, another approximate 20% of the A.T. was assessed. These sections were selected by A.T. Clubs and/or ATC staff. Each CD contains the data collected in 2005. They are labeled by club district and date assessed.

The assessment spreadsheet files are in Excel format and require MS Excel or compatible software for viewing.
Some maps are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar software.

Each spreadsheet contains three types of worksheets:

  • Complete "long" list of all deficiencies identified for each club with full GPS and other geographic
information for each deficiency. Note: This sheet is not formatted to print because of its large size
  • "Printable" list of all deficiencies identified for each club with only the essential GPS and other information
for each deficiency. This worksheet is formatted to print on legal (8.5 x 14 inch) paper.
  • Individual "printable" lists of deficiencies corresponding to each section assessed. They are labeled by date(s). There may be as few as one or as many as 15 or more of these. They are each formatted to
print on legal (8.5 x 14 inch) paper and are designed to accompany the maps.
